Applying Ethnography of Communication on a dialog

Tugas 3 Sociolinguistics

This is a small project to apply the theory Ethnography of Communication to analyze an interaction.
Do the analysis in the following procedures.
Identify and determine the components of the communication of the following dialog, such as:
1. The genre/ type of event
2. Topic
3. Purpose
4. Setting
5. Key
6. Participants
7. Act sequence

The Dialog:

A: Well. Good morning. Tell me about yourself
B: “Well, I’m currently an account executive at Smith, where I handle our top-performing client. Before that, I worked at an agency where I was on three different major national healthcare brands. And while I really enjoyed the work that I did, I’d love the chance to dig in much deeper with one specific healthcare company, which is why I’m so excited about this opportunity with Metro Health Center.”
A: How did you hear about this position?
B: “I heard about an opening on the product team through a friend of a friend, Akiko, and since I’m a big fan of your work and have been following you for a while I decided it would be a great role for me to apply for.”
A: Why do you want to work at this company?
B: “I saw on The Muse that you were also hiring for new positions on the West Coast to support your new operations there. I did some more reading about the new data center you’re building there and that excites me as I know this means there’ll be opportunities to train new teammates. I also learned through a Wall Street Journal article that you’re expanding in Mexico as well. I speak Spanish fluently and would be eager to step up and help liaise whenever necessary.

Answer:

The analysis of the dialogue on the components of communication using the Communication Ethnographic framework is as follows:

1. Genre/type of event
The genre/type of event contained in the dialogue between A and B is about "job interviews". The dialogue involves A as an interviewer who asks B some questions which is the person applying for the job or the job seeker who provides answers to A's questions.  Such interviews are usually used to assess the qualifications of potential employees for a job position.

2. Topic
The main topics discussed in the dialogue were about the job applicant's qualifications, then work experience, and the reasons or motivations and other abilities possessed by B to be accepted to work at the company he applied for. And in the interview, it was seen that the topic of conversation was qualification B for the position at “Metro Health Center”. B also explained his experience as an account executive at Smith and his interest in working for the company that had the job offer.

3. Purpose

The purpose of the conversation or dialogue is for A to assess B's qualifications for the job position, his work experience and the motivation or reason for choosing the position offered by the company, and other skills to be considered for acceptance in the company.

4. Setting

The setting contained in the dialogue is in an interview room or formal setting where job interviews or recruitment rooms for interviewed workers take place.

5. Key

Key aspects of these conversations include applicants' qualifications and experience, their interest in the position, his knowledge of the company's recent activities, and his language skills (Spanish). The interview was serious, by using polite questions, and in a formal context (job interview). The interviewer and the applicant are equally focused on the task at hand, which is to assess the qualifications of the applicant for the job. The participants are using polite language and are addressing each other by their titles.

6. Participants

The participants in the dialogue or conversation are as follows:
A, is an interviewer (a person assigned by the company to interview job applicants) and
B, who is the interviewee (the person who is applying for a vacant job position).

7. Act Sequence

The act sequence that can be observed in the dialogue is as follows:
  • A starts the conversation by greeting B and asking him to introduce himself.
  • B responds by providing information about their current job position, then previous work experience, and expressing his interest to work with Metro Health Center.
  • A gives question for B how he heard or learned about the vacant position.
  • B gives an explanation that he heard about the opening through a friend of a friend and decided to apply based on his admiration or interest in the company and the job.
  • A inquires of B the reason behind his interest to be employed by the company.
  • B provides reasons for his interest, citing information he gathered from sources like The Muse and The Wall Street Journal, highlighting the company's expansion plans and how he can contribute.
In conclusion, the dialog is an example of how Ethnography of Communication can be used to analyse communication in a variety of settings. By identifying the components of communication, we can gain a better understanding of how participants use language to achieve their goals.
