‘The students are not allowed to use their mother tongue.’
Answer:
'Students are not allowed to use their mother tongue' is an activity applied to Direct Methods (DM). Richards & Rodgers (2003) have shown that the direct method aims to guide students to communicate in the target language they are learning, starting at the first learning level. In this case, the student is not allowed to use their native language in the language class. DM is also known as the natural method developed by Berlitz at the end of the 19th century.
The same thing was also expressed by Brow (2015) that in the Direct Method, foreign language learning should be the same as mother tongue learning which involves oral interaction, and without using the mother tongue. In response to GTM (Grammar Translation Method), the direct method became popular because the purpose of this method was to learn how to use a foreign language in communication.
This method aims to facilitate students with real knowledge of the target language. There is no translation activity, where the teacher has to explain the target language through activities and demonstrations, reality, and pictures to describe the material. Students are expected to actively participate in using the target language in everyday life situations.
However, in relation to the learning approach, more precisely on CLT. According to Richards and Ridgers (2007), the concept of CLT focuses on language function. Language learning means learning how to communicate, and CLT emphasizes the target language without using your native language. In this case, we should ask the students in learning activities without using their mother tongue and focus on communicative competence by applying some activities.
