Each type of syllabus brings different principles. One type has specialties compared to others. Mention three (3) principles of competence-based syllabus which are distinctive from other syllabi.

Soepriyatna (2019) stated that a competency-based syllabus defines what students must know and be able to do as a result of teaching, and it means that language learning should be connected to the context where the language is used. This syllabus is designed based on competencies learners are expected to master in specific situations and activities. 

Richard and Rodgers (in Soepriyatna, 2019) stated that in language learning, this syllabus focuses on what students are expected to do with the language. This syllabus includes a description of basic skills, knowledge, attitudes, and the behavior required for effective performance or real-world tasks or activities that form the basis for the instructional content (Richard and Rogers, 2001). 

So, this syllabus will list the knowledge, skill, and attitude needed to complete the task (Soepriyatna, 2019). And we can mention that the content of this syllabus is as follows:

  • Contains units of competence students are required in life.
  • Forms units of competency, such as a task, a role, a function, or an activity.
  • Different competencies required particular activities. 

Soepriyatna (2019) also mentioned that three elements in a competency-based syllabus are as follows:

  • Performance: what students will be able to do?
  • Conditions: the parameters within which they can do it.
  • Criteria: the level of competence expected

Three principles of competence-based syllabi:

  • Focus on learning outcomes: Competence-based syllabi focus on what students should be able to do, rather than what they should know. This means that the syllabus clearly outlines the specific skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students will be expected to demonstrate upon completion of the course.
  • Emphasis on real-world application: Competence-based syllabi are designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the real world. This means that the learning activities and assessments are often based on real-world scenarios and problems.
  • Flexibility in learning pace: Competence-based syllabi allow students to progress at their own pace. This means that students who are struggling with a particular concept will have the time and support they need to master it before moving on to the next concept.

Then, class activities for this syllabus type should reflect competencies that students will have at the end of learning. This syllabus emphasizes real-world activities related to the domain of life or according to the typical field of work that students will do. 

So, it can be concluded that from the explanation above, this type of syllabus is different from other types of syllabi. Because the competency-based syllabus includes well-defined goals that measure certain competencies (cover skills, knowledge, and attitude) and with three main elements, namely: Performance, conditions, and criterion.
